Blower-Regenerated or Heatless? Comparing Desiccant Dryers

The difference is how the desiccant regenerates

Both dryer types adsorb moisture onto a desiccant. A heatless dryer uses part of its dried compressed air at low pressure to regenerate the bed. A heated blower-regenerated dryer generally passes ambient air through a blower and heater to the saturated bed. Regeneration, cooling and repressurisation arrangements vary by model.

Saving compressed air is not zero-energy operation

A blower design can reduce compressed-air consumption, but its blower and heater use electricity. Check separately whether cooling or repressurisation consumes process air. A heatless dryer's low electrical nameplate rating likewise excludes the compressor energy needed to produce purge air. Compare systems per unit of net dry air delivered to the process at the same quality.

Which operating profile suits each option?

A heatless option deserves consideration where regeneration simplicity and initial investment are priorities. At high annual operating hours and high flow, investigate whether blower regeneration offers a lower total cost. The result is not automatic: electricity price, compressor load behaviour, actual moisture load, ambient temperature and humidity, cooling method and service conditions all matter.

Put quotations on the same basis

Separate inlet flow from net outlet flow and align pressure, temperature, inlet moisture and target pressure dew point. Request average regeneration-air consumption, heater/blower power and run times, pressure drop, part-load control and maintenance items. Annual energy assessment must include the compressor equivalent of regeneration air and electrical auxiliaries within the same boundary. Treating heater nameplate power as continuous annual consumption, or air savings as guaranteed electricity savings, can distort the result.
