How Do You Measure PSA Energy Performance on Site?

The power of the generator control cabinet alone cannot describe PSA plant energy performance. A comparable kWh/Nm³ result requires a defined measurement boundary, gas quality, delivery pressure and reporting period.

State the measurement boundary

Identify which compressors, dryers, PSA units, cooling auxiliaries and boosters are included. If a shared compressor feeds other users, do not assign its entire consumption to the PSA plant; support the allocation method with measurements. Multiplying motor nameplate kW by operating hours is not a substitute for energy metering.

Log energy and gas volume over the same period

Use a suitable energy meter for active energy in kWh and a gas flow meter for volume at specified normal conditions. Synchronize timestamps and check gas selection, compensation, installation requirements and instrument verification. Explicitly account for startup gas, rejected product and leaks according to the meter location. If receiver inventory changes, distinguish produced gas from delivered volume.

Calculate specific energy

Specific energy = total energy within the boundary (kWh) / conforming gas delivered over the same period (Nm³). As an illustrative example only, 480 kWh and 800 Nm³ of conforming product give 0.60 kWh/Nm³. This is not a Mentis performance guarantee. The denominator is product gas at its stated purity; do not replace it with a pure oxygen or nitrogen equivalent without defining that separate basis.

Compare equivalent conditions

Results cannot be directly compared when purity, pressure, ambient or inlet conditions, load profile or boundaries differ. Include representative production and standby periods, then repeat the same method after leak repairs or control improvements. Qualified personnel must make electrical measurement connections. Share energy and flow records with Mentis to assess efficiency opportunities at your plant.
