The role of oxygen in cutting

Oxygen reacts with the metal and adds heat to the process, particularly when laser cutting carbon steel. An oxide layer can form on the cut edge, requiring further treatment depending on welding, painting or coating requirements. Suitable recipes vary with material and thickness. Gas pressure and flow must follow validated machine parameters.

Why is 99% and above insufficient as a specification?

The label 99%+ covers a broad range of qualities and does not establish suitability for every laser. Linde's laser cutting guidance recommends oxygen purity of at least 99.95%; the particular machine specification must also be checked. Therefore, oxygen at 99% or 99.5% should not be treated as equivalent to a higher grade required by the process.

Assess the supply using gas analysis

Ask for the guaranteed minimum oxygen concentration, measurement method and limits for moisture and contaminants, rather than a nominal value alone. Remaining nitrogen and argon also determine gas composition. A standard concentrator or PSA generator cannot automatically replace high-purity laser oxygen simply because it produces oxygen. Verify the specific model and project conditions.

Generation, cylinders or liquid oxygen?

First compare options that can meet the required gas quality. On-site generation feasibility depends on verified purity, flow, delivery pressure and duty profile. Cylinder and liquid oxygen supply require assessment of deliveries, storage, reserve and vaporisation where applicable. Annual consumption and peak demand are different inputs; use both when comparing investment and operating costs.

Sample cutting and suitable integration

Run trials on the same sheet material and thickness with recorded machine settings. Assess speed, burrs, edge condition and subsequent processing. Verify gas quality at a representative sampling point. Oxygen line components must be suitable for oxygen service and meet the required cleanliness conditions. Qualified technical personnel should assess connections, material compatibility and pressure requirements.
