An oxygen concentrator retains much of the nitrogen in ambient air on an adsorbent, producing an oxygen-enriched gas stream. Central PSA oxygen generators also use air separation. A shared operating principle does not mean that different devices have equivalent intended uses, gas quality, delivery pressures or conformity documentation.
Selecting a concentrator intended for individual use differs from designing a facility's central gas supply. Central supply requires simultaneous demand, distribution, storage, measurement and backup to be considered together. For medical use, the device and application must meet requirements established by healthcare professionals. An industrial generator cannot automatically be treated as a medical device.
Do not compare quotations using litres per minute or cubic metres per hour alone. Establish the oxygen concentration, outlet pressure and ambient conditions associated with each flow rating. Operating hours, peak simultaneous demand and gas quality belong in the same specification. Pressure at the point of use may differ from outlet pressure because distribution losses must be included.
Define how demand will be supplied during a power failure, maintenance or a gas quality alarm. Select the backup source, automatic changeover, alarm reporting and staff responsibilities according to the application's criticality. Production capacity alone does not guarantee continuity. Maintenance access, filters, adsorbent condition and measurement verification also need an operating plan.
Document the application, continuous and peak consumption, required oxygen quality, delivery pressure, operating hours and site conditions. This allows equipment cost to be compared alongside electricity, maintenance, backup and distribution. The best fit is a verifiable supply that meets the duty, rather than simply the largest catalogue flow.
